Just wondering if tailors were considered well-to-do or not.
I have a family that left Germany for London in the 1880's and it appears everyone was involved in tailoring(census info.) parents, cousins, etc.
They settled in St. Pancras and as of 1911 census they are on Chandos Road.
Would be grateful for any information regarding this area also.

A lot of the German Immigrants at that time worked as tailors but did so from their homes, My great grandfather August Albert Franz VOSS did exactly that in 1880. Lots of Germans lived in the area you mention and also the east end just outside the city of London. My great grandfather was based just north of the Tower in Chambers Street. The Anglo German FHS have access to a lot of records partucularly from the German Lutheran Churshes.

My greta grandfather had his own house in Chambers Street. When he died his estate was woth £350 which was quite a sum in 1921.
