Hello All,

I have a particular interest in an address 25 High St, Whitechapel and am wondering if it still exists? All searches so far have proved fruitless. I have reason to believe it may have been associated with the wine / beer industry.

Any input welcome.

If you go to http://booth.lse.ac.uk

Enter Whitechapel High Street in full under the search for a modern street name it should come up. Hide the new map and view the 1898 one.

It is situated on the main A11 road that is a continuation of Aldgate High Street. It starts at the junction of Middlesex Street ending at the junction of Osborn Street, where the road then becomes the Whitechapel Road.

I would greatly doubt that the street numbering is the same today as in 1872, plus extensive redevelopment after WWII probably changed it, but who knows!

Regards,

Steve

"From a PO Directory of about 1870, at Nos 24 & 25 Whitechapel High Street were William Coates & Co, wine merchants."

From an 1851 directory:

Whitechapel High Street (from Aldgate High St to Whitechapel Rd)...
...
Here Elephant & Castle ct intersects...
...
25 Talbot, Misses Eliza and Emily Coates
...
Red Lion (just a pub)
...
Here Leman St intersects.

That additional geographical information may help in pinpointing the address with the help of some old maps.

I had a look at the National Archives site and found a ref to William Coates & Son at http://www.nra.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/codocs.asp?LR=76 It would appear that the Guildhall Library has some archive material for the company

Best wishes
