My Great grandfather was Peter Evans a postman in Rochdale in the late 1800 early 1900's, he died in 1937. The 1901 census shows Peter being born in Buckley, North Wales: I think I have found him on the 1881 census however this suggests he was born in Wrexham. Is anyone able to help me as I cannot find any census for Wales before 1881.

Thanks

An EVANS from Wales? A year of birth might be useful. Have you looked on this site? www.northwalesbmd.org.uk (http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk)

Hi

Here is your Peter and family in 1871.

RG10/5641 Folio 81 Page 1
Harp Inn, Bagillt, Flintshire
Peter Evans 38 Inn Keeper born Llanasa Flintshire
Maria wife 33 born Flint
William son 11 born Flint
Peter son 7 born Buckley Flintshire
Richard F. son 5 born Bagillt, Flintshire

Peter married Alice Jane Shuck (born Worcester)

Peter Evans & Alice Jane Shuck Jul/Sept Rochdale vol 8e page 51

It seems from the censuses that Peter's brother was also in Rochdale.

Hi RJ,

I think the 1881 census you have found is not correct. Here is your Peter Evans in 1881:-

RG11/4114 Folio 20 Page 34
19 Sam Street, Wardleworth, Lancs
Maria Evans widow 44 Housekeeper born Flint
William son 21 Cotton Operative born Flint
Peter son 17 Apprentice born Buckley
Rd Thos. son 15 Cotton Operative born Bagillt
Georgina Isabella Parry 22 neice Dom Svt born Little Woolton, Lancs.

Hi RJ,

As you say you don't have access to earlier censuses I looked for Peter Evans (Senior) in 1841. There are a couple of possibilities but this one seems by far the most likely when backed up by 1851 census:-

RG107./1413 Folio 22 Page 15
Holywell Flintshire
William Evans 50 Smelter
Robert 10
Ann 10
Peter 7
Samuel 4
(All born in county)

The 1851 shows Peter and Samuel both born Bagillt as nephews of Samuel & Dorothy Jones.

Hi RJ,

These baptisms are recorded in Holywell, Flintshire, they are children of William & Mary Evans and tie in nicely with the rest of the information and are the siblings of your Great Grandfather.

Robert 9 Mar 1823
Robert 9 Sept 1825
Anne 16 Mar 1828
Peter 2 May 1830
Samuel 22 May 1836

The first Robert must have died in infancy. I also suspect this Peter (1830) died and your Peter was born to same parents about 1833 (his death and census ages point to this as a birth year, but it also possible that this is your Peter and he didn't know his exact birth year). Your Peter was born in Buckley, unlike his siblings who were born around Bagillt/Holywell/Flint area so your Peter is more likely to be baptised at Buckley.

Hi RJ,
Please ignore this last bit of my reply as I put in some wrong information. This is not the Peter born in Buckley but his father. He does appear from his death and census age to be born in 1833 so the child baptised in 1830 could have died and a second Peter born in 1833.

Sorry about the above and hope it does not confuse you too much but by the time I noticed my mistake, it was too late to edit it. That is the one ruling on this otherwise excellent forum that I find most annoying!

Thanks Jeremy, but I was actually waiting for RJO1 to answer. They must have known that information at the start. For all we know, you could have gone to a great deal of effort looking for the wrong person.

Hi Wirral
Peter was born approximately 1864. The information Jeremy provided from the 1871 census is accurate especially the fact that he married Alice Jane Shuck.
I know that Peters father was also called Peter from his, Peter juniors, marriage certificate.

It would have been useful for you to have given that information, as well as the date of birth, in your initial request.
