The Gutteridges of Chapman Street:
This seems to be the same family followed through the censuses

1861: Chapman Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Joseph Gutteridge, Head, 40, Cattle Dealer, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Ann Gutteridge, Wife, 31, Wilbarston, Leicestershire
Mary Ann Gutteridge, dau, 10, Scholar, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Sarah Gutteridge, dau, 2, Scholar, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Harry Gutteridge, son, 1 month, Scholar, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Sarah Boye, Aunt, 46, Domestic Nurse, Loughborough, Leicestershire

1871: 13 Chapman Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Joseph Gutteridge, Head, 50, Commission Agent, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Ann Gutteridge, Wife, 41, Wilbarston, Leicestershire
Mary A Gutteridge, dau, 20, School Teacher, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Sarah Gutteridge, dau, 12, Scholar, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Harry Gutteridge, son, 10, Scholar, Loughborough, Leicestershire

1881: 13 Chapman Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Sarah Gutteridge, daug, 22, Machinist Cotton Factory, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Harry Gutteridge, son, 20, FWK Hosiery, Loughborough, Leicestershire
Tamar Gutteridge, mother, 87, Loughborough, Leicestershire

1881: 11 Knifesmithgate, Chesterfield, Derbyshire
Joseph GUTRIDGE, Boarder, Widower, 59, Loughboro, Leicester, Horse Dealer

This all sets several puzzles for which I would welcome assistance.

1. If the Derbyshire 1881 extract is correct this explains the "disappearance" from Chapman Street of Joseph Gutteridge. He is now a widower and has moved away. But what happened to his wife. Can anyone trace a death?

2. Who exactly is Tamar Gutteridge? She is recorded as "mother" but is she in reality grandmother, that is Joseph's mother? Can anyone find evidence to support this?

3. And who is the mysterious Sarah Boye recorded as Aunt (presumably of Joseph) in the 1862 Census?

A lot of questions but I would appreciate help in clarifying family relationships here.

Many thanks

David Gutteridge

Just thought I try and find Tamar & work out who/where she figures in the family.

1841 White Street, All Saints, Leicester

RG number: HO107 Piece: 605 Book/Folio: 2/14 Page: 21

Tamer 1796, Mary 1826 & Sarah 1831.

Can't seem to find her on any other census at the moment.

Just spotted Tamar on 1881 living with her unmarried daughter Sarah 1859 and son Harry 1861.

Tamar 1794 widow.
Living at 13 Chapman St, Loughborough
RG number:RG11 Piece : 3145 Folio: 94 Page: 51

I assume that Sarah Harry & Mary are all Joseph's siblings

I reckon you are right. The Sarah and Harry appear to be the children of the missing Joseph in the 1881 census, and your comment that Tamar is recorded as mother (of the missing head of household) then makes sense. The ages fit Joseph as father of Sarah and Harry.
Joanna,
Your 1841 discovery of Tamer is useful. It would appear that Tamar had children with the names Sarah 1831 and Mary 1826 as well as the son Joseph 1821. Slightly confusing (though not surprising) that Joseph chose the same names for his own children.

So a great step forward in knowing that Joseph's mother is certainly Tamar.
But who was his father? and can either of you find a marriage date/

Sincere thanks for your assistance.

I think I have answered my own question, Scouring IGI for baptisms I now reckon Joseph Gutteridge and Tamar had the following children
Joseph 1821
William 1823
Mary Ann 1824
Eliza 1826
Ann 1826
William 1828
Henry 1830
Sarah 1831
and possibly Harry.

I am now trying to firm up dates for Joseph and Tamar. I guess their marriage must have been about 1820

The above list of 9 children gleaned from above postings and a couple of family trees on Genes Reunited. What can I now firm up?

Joseph 1821 Haven't found birth/baptism record but we deduce this one valid since his mother has charge of his children in 1881 census
William 1823 from All saints baptism
Mary Ann 1824 from All Saints baptism (same baptism day as William)
Eliza 1826
Ann 1826
William 1828
Henry 1830
Sarah 1831 from All Saints baptism
Harry - discounted as Harry is son of Joseph 1821 NOT Joseph 1786.

So there is no evidence found yet for Eliza, Ann, William and Henry.
The next task seems to be to find their families in census or baptism records.

Hi

I'm not sure if is any help, but Harry Gutteridge (1861) was my Great Great Grandfather. His father, Joseph (1834) married Ann Jessop from Northampton, in 1850. They had two daughters as well as Harry, called Mary-Ann and Sarah. In fact i have a family bible passed down from Harry, via his daughter, Grace.

Unfortunately, it looks like you already know most of the things i do, but if i can be of any help at all, please let me know.

Best wishes

Jenny

Jenny,
Welcome to Brit-Gen-Forum. I hope you find it useful in extending your family tree.
At the moment you are on a loose branch of Gutteridges that I have not yet grafted into my main tree. Is there any chance of you scanning the entries in that family bible, or transcribing them. There might be useful facts hidden there?
Best wishes with your research

Hi

I've sent you that page via email, hope thats ok.

Also, in the back of the book i mentioned is a page with family from York, who are called 'Santon'. There is a lot detail but i have no idea who they are or why their details are enclosed. I don't suppose you have come across them have you?

Best wishes

Jenny

Jenny,
No - I have no Santon entries in my tree. It may be that someone in BritGen Forums has come across the name as a York family.
