Hi i have been helping my wife trace her family history and her Grandfather was born in Singapore just before WW2 is there away to find his birth details. If he was born to British parents would his birth be registered anywhere in the UK

If his birth was registered with the British Consulate then it should appear on the GRO overseas birth indexes. It won't appear on the usual GRO indexes.

I was born in Malaya (some years after the war!) and my birth registration is there.

If you give me his name and birth year, I can look it up for you.

Joe, I have checked the consular indices for 1918 to 1922, and cannot find his birth unfortunately, also checked the army birth indices and Regimental birth indices and nothing there either that I can see, maybe Gill can find it

Hi Joe,

I'm a little confused in that you say your wife's grandfather was born just before WW2 and yet his birth date is March 1920 (quite a bit before the war).

However, I've looked for any references to a John Crowther in the overseas indexes and have found only one reference which is a marriage of John W Crowther to a Dorothy Massey in 1939 in Jhansi (Northern India).

He is not listed on the Army births, consular births, regimental births or marine births although there are other Crowther entries listed.

On FreeBmd there are several John Crowther's born in 1920, but there is a John W registered in Jun 1920 in Sunderland district, mother's maiden name Coghill. This may (or may not) be connected with the John W getting married in 1939.

I'm not sure what else to suggest.
