Hello, I've reached a brick wall with my Dublin G-G-Grandfather, William Malone BANKS and don't know how to go any further with all the information that he supplied during the censuses and for marriage/birth certificates! The messy/intricate and somewhat confusing story so far briefly is:

1841-Census -'William Banks' At Lambeth Surrey, 30, Labr. born Ireland
(HO 107/1060/6 Page 10)

1845-Has son Edward Charles Banks born Peckham (noted from 1851 Census)
Birth certificate states father's name is JAMES WILLIAM BANKS (occ.=
painter), mother is Jane Eliza Turpin.
1847-Has daughter Caroline Banks born Southwark(noted from 1851 Census)
Birth certificate states father's name is JAMES WILLIAM BANKS (occ.=
painter), mother is Jane Eliza Banks (formerly Fox, latterly Turpin)
1849-Has son, William Malone Banks born Bermondsey (from 1851)
Birth certificate states father's name is WILLIAM MALONE BANKS (occ.
= engraver) Mother is Eliza Banks (formerly Fox)
1851-Census-'William M. Banks' At Camberwell, 40, Seal Engraver, Born
Dublin, Ireland (married to Eliza, 35, b.Kentish Town, Middx.) with
children Eliza 8, Edward 5, Caroline 4, William M. 1.
1851-Has son, Richard Malone Banks born Camberwell,
Birth certificate states father's name is WILLIAM MALONE BANKS (occ.
= Engraver). Mother is Eliza Banks Formerly Fox.
1861-Most likely family at RG9/342/ 72/ Page 31 in Newington, but wife's
name is left blank|banghead|, William's place of birth is left blank (!!)
occupation is a commercial traveller(?!) yet son's William and Richard
Banks seem to be point to it being the correct family!
1867- Marriage Certificate for William MALONE (no mention of the surname
BANKS!!) to Jane Eliza Turpin, bachelor
and widow, in Bermondsey, occupation: Warehouseman
1871-Appears to be them in RG10/617/154/59, but widower William Sr.'s
occup. is a cutler from Paisley, Scotland(!!?) but sons William and
Richard are a match to the family!!

On his Marriage Certificate William states his father was JOHN MALONE (again no mention of the name BANKS).

I want to trace the family back to Dublin, but with the name of William changing from William Malone Banks to James William Banks to William Malone, it is proving to be very complicated and I'm not sure which name to go with. I managed to get the next generation by way of his father's name from the Marriage Certificate (John MALONE) (deceased by 1867), but does that mean I should be looking for Malones in Dublin? Where does the name Banks come from and James for that matter?! Could it be that he was trying to disguise the fact that he was an Irishman in London and so changed his name to Banks? Why would he change his name so much, when it is very clear that it is the same man who fathered the children and married Jane Eliza Turpin?

If anyone can help me with this and set me on the right path and/or make some sense out of it all, I'd greatly appreciate it! I just don't know how to go beyond this point.

Kind regards,

Jilly
