Hi , Was always told GFather died but turned out he was placed inn bootham hill until he died 30 plus years later (1962) Does anyone know who to contact there so I can obtain more information or does anyone know anything about the place? I beleive it was for the insane/mentally ill. thanks Jean

It looks like the hospital was called Bootham Park. York University, Borthwick Institute of Historical Research (http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/bihr/), holds the admission and discharge records (amongst others) from 1777 to 1960.

See what The National Archives has to say here (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=1562&hospital=Bootham+Park&town=&searchdatabase.x=57&searchdatabase.y=6).

Here I go forgetting again....

Browneyes posted a very useful link to Mental Hospitals in this thread (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41555). I have checked, and Bootham Park is listed - just scroll down the index on the right-hand side of the website and have a read.

Thankyou all for the information. It sounds like it was the best of times and the worst of times but hopefully will be able to find out more with your input. blessings, Jean
