Hello Jenny,

I had a look on the 1851 census of Barley for any PETTITs and came up with the following two names:

HO 107/1707, folio 409, page 6
High Street

David PETTIT Lodger Widower 30 Brickmaster Herts, Barley
Thomas PETTIT Do U 12 Ag Lab do do

They were lodging with a James STEWARD who was a Carpenter.

Looking on Hugh Wallis's IGI site, both David and Thomas are shown as the sons of Henry PETTIT and Sarah and there is also a marriage shown on 12 October 1819 at Barley of a Henry PETTIT to a Sarah HOWARD. Could your Henry have married twice??

I also noticed on Hugh Wallis's site the marriage of Sarah PETTIT to Edward Hawkes at Barley on 30 October 1834 and they are still in Barley in the 1851 census:

Folio 395, page 13
High Street

Edward HAWKES Head Mar 43 Blacksmith Cambs Melbourn
Sarah do Wife Mar 39 Herts Barley
Edward do Son 10 do Therfield
William do Son 8 do Barley
Edwin do Son 7 do do
Sarah do Daur 5 do do
Ezra do Son 3 do do
David Ellis do Son 1 do do

No other PETTITs in Barley.

Hope this helps in some way. Good luck.

Janet.

Hi Janet,

Thanks for the information - all useful. I do not know if Henry married twice yet.
The site - Hugh Wallis's IGI site - is this accessable via the net or is it only at genealogy places. I have not come across it yet and it looks like it could be interesting.
Thanks again for your help

Hi Jenny,

Yes Hugh Wallis's site is accessible via the internet (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/). Just follow the links to the county you are interested in, then you can see if there are any LDS extracted records for the village/town/city of your choice. Then enter the surname you are researching and see what turns up. As with the LDS Family Search site, it is by no means comprehensive but all the entries are extracted records and not guesses!!. However, mistakes can still be made in transcription so all entries should be verified, but it is a very good starting point and saves trawling through many, many records for a particular name in a particular parish.

Good luck.

Janet.

Hi

Local Historian, Tom Doig, who lives in Barley has a massive collection of information about Barley & Barkway residents.
