Hi,
I found a baptism record of one of my ancestor's yesterday which has me a little confused. It states:-
St Endellion - 5th Mar 1818 - William PEARCE son of Samuel & Sarah - officer in King's boat.

Is this another way of stating that Samuel was in the Navy? Would there be records of naval men? Was Port Isaac a naval port?

I was aware that the family had maritime connections as William is listed in later census returns as a customs offcer and a pilot and his son Thomas is completely missing from all the census until he turns up in Cardiff as a ship's carpenter, presumably he'd been at sea from an early age.

The maritime connection does explain how the family moved along the Cornish coast to the Bristol channel though.

I look forward to hearing your ideas.
