This is a further desparate attempt to find my BUTLER ancestors in an early census.

The family has enlarged somewhat:

James Butler, head, abt. 56 yrs, organ builder
Hannah Shill Butler, wife
Amelia Augusta Butler, daughter, 16 yrs, b .St. Martin in the Fields
Ellen Augusta Butler, daughter, 15 yrs, b. St. George Bloomsbury
Caroline Louisa Butler, daughter, 15 yrs, b. St. Giles in the Fields
James Keating Butler, son, 12 yrs, b. St. Giles in the Fields

The last two children were born in Thornhaugh Street in the parish of St. Giles in the Fields.

Could SKS please check HO107/0686 for them?

Any help, advice or leads would be most gratefully accepted.

Justin

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I have looked at most of maps of the maps at motco - an excellent site. The baptism record for Caroline Louisa Butler explicitly states Thornhaugh Street. James Keating was definitely born in St Giles, so I assumed in the same street.

If you can check for the family in the renamed Alfred Street, I would be very grateful indeed.

The next address I have for the family was East Street, Hoxton in 1844. But they weren't there in 1841 either.

Thanks again.

Justin

Thank you very much for your efforts.

According to the British Institute of Organ Studies, JB was building organs right through the 1820s, 30s and 40s. But as you say - for or for whom!!

It's all very frustrating. I need to access earlier trade directories or the census.

Oh well, it all keeps me occupied.

Thanks again,

Justin
