My g-grandfather Walter Lambert is shown in 1871 Census as "railway clerk". residence Kegworth, Leics. Anyone have an idea which Railway Company? (Availability of on-line archives?) No trace in 1881 census, but his wife is "railway clerk's wife"- so possibly still with Railway Co. Thanks

Many railway records are held by The National Archives (TNA) at Kew who have a couple of research guides (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1#r) - click on the links prefixed 'Railways'
It may be possible to identify files using TNA's catalogue, so that you can request estimates for providing copies - but they are not available to view online.
If you get stuck using the catalogue, please ask and I may be able to point you in the right direction.
