Wanted: More information about Simon Packe.

Simon was the son of Sir Christopher Packe, Cromwellian Lord Mayor of London, and was born in London 1653/1654. He was a military officer, and was one of the "Portsmouth Captains" cashiered in 1688. He later served in Ireland. He died 1701: Lt. Col. Simon Packe of London, buried Prestwold April 11th 1701.

Some sources claim that he was the ancestor of the Anglo-Irish Pack(e) family, which included Major General Sir Denis Pack, KCB (and his cousin, my GGG-grandfather.) I don't buy it, but have no proof either way. I'd like to find out:

1) Did Simon leave a will?
2) Did he father any children while in Ireland?
3) Did he ever marry?

Any information and suggestions appreciated. Please remember, it is a long swim from here to Kew. <G>

Thanks,

Peggy

You might like to seek out the (British) Dictionary of National Biography. An academic library might be a good place to try.

DNB says "After his third marriage in 1669 Packe retired to his manor at Cotes [Leicestershire], where he died after a long illness on 27 May 1682. He was buried in the parish church at Prestwold, where his heir erected an impressive monument. His will, made on 10 November 1681 and proved on 26 June 1682, was that of a prosperous merchant who had diversified into land and other properties."

It says he was born in 1599, the son of Thomas Packe of Kettering, Northamptonshire, and his wife, Catherine.

I'm pretty sure this is your man. The article mentions his younger son, Simon.

It doesn't say where the will was proved.

PS The article mentions that he was mayor but he was a merchant not a soldier.

Hello Peter,

That's the baptism I have. I'm taking the burial date not from the IGI, but from an online transcription of the Prestwold Registers.

"Lt. Col. Simon Packe of London, buried Prestwold April 11th 1701"

I see 2 IGI death records, both member submissions. I think that they are for the same person. They give the date of birth as 31 Dec 1654. That could fit with the baptism date, allowing for confusion about the old calendar on the part of either the member or the extractor.

Thanks,

Peggy

Hello Peter (Goodey),

There may be some confusion about my question. I have a folder full of info about Lord Mayor Christopher Packe, including his DNB entry.

I'm looking for more info about his son Simon, who is alleged to have founded my Anglo-Irish family. The father Christopher was the merchant/politician; Simon was the soldier. It is Simon's will (if one exists, or an abstract exists) that I'd like to find. He is supposed to have died in Westmeath, but I found no will listed in the pre-Four-Courts-fire reports of the Deputy Keepers in Dublin.

The Leicester and Rutland Record Office, under "Additional Packe family papers, 1655-1991" has an intriguing file "re Simon Packe, soldier and songwriter, 1654 - 1701." Songwriter?? If I ever get across the Pond. . . .

Thanks for the e-mail,

Peggy

I really appreciate your sending the information, Peter. I wouldn't mind at all if lots of people got "carried away" answering my questions. :)

Thank you!
