South Downs School

Hi,

l've just found my GGGrandmothers son in the 1911 Census as an inmate of the South Downs School, Brighton Road Sutton, Surrey, does anyone know what type of Institution this was as l've been unable to find out so far, and would there be any records available.

Have a look at workhouses.org.uk. You might find that it's part of the South Metropolitan School District, which was in Brighton Road, Sutton. There was also a Downs School in Banstead Road, Sutton (also referred to there). Whichever it is, the surviving records are at the LMA.

Hi Kerrywood,

l have had a look at the workhouse site and come to the conclusion that the school was actually the Belmont Workhouse for Men, so will pay a visit to the LMA to see if he is mentioned in the admissions/discharge registers.

Have a good look at A2A before you set off.

Although Belmont Workhouse was administered by the Fulham Union, it was also used by (at least) the Westminster and Southwark Unions.

Therefore the records may be in several series relating to different Boards of Guardians.

lve had a look and there are a couple of files associated with the workhouse so l shall have a look on my next visit to the Lma thanks for the advice.
