This is a desperate cry for help.......well, a polite request!
Does any one have access to the 1871 census or index for Sheffield, particularly Eccleshall Bierlow, or Rotherham?
I am looking for an Emma born in Boston about 1840 and Henry born in Leicester about 1842, with either the name of ATKIN or HARRIS.
I have only these details about them from the 1881/1891 census. They were my g.gr.parents but as I cannot find a birth registration for grandfather, also Henry born about 1876, I have no idea of her maiden name. In 1881 they were at 12 Bishop Square, Eccleshall Bierlow, the family were using the name ATKIN. In 1891 they were at 141 Masborough Street, Rotherham and the family were then HARRIS. My grandfather's Army Service Record gives his parents names as Henry and Emma Harris.
That is all I have, so if anyone can find them anywhere in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1871, I would so very grateful!

Do you know why Henry's birthplace seems to have changed from the 1871 census to the 1881 census?

I just did a quick scan of the 1871 census for the ATKIN name in Hull to see if there were any that looked likely as Henry's parents. There are quite a few ATKINs but only a handful of a suitable age. I like the prospects for the first couple -- James and Jane ATKIN. His occupation is tied to the shipping industry -- like Henry's -- and they have a daughter in the same age range as Henry. Have you tried obtaining a birth certificate for Henry?

Even more to work on! I'm away for a few days now, so I have printed out the whole lot and will see if I can find any clues.
Re Henry's birth cert - that is the problem, up till now I haven't been able to find him, so no mother's maiden name!
