I have an ancestor (gt gt grandfather) who died in Cane Hill Asylum, Coulsdon in 1913. His wife is also said to have died there, but I have so far been unable to find proof. Is there any way of looking at patient lists for these places?

You would surely have been better off starting a new thread for a new question.

What you need to do is to consult the Hospital Records Database -
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/search.asp

This will tell you that the records you want are at the Croydon Archives Service

http://www.croydon.gov.uk/leisure/archives/archives/archives

Speak to the Archives about access conditions before getting on your bike to go to Croydon ;).

Even if the records are officially "closed", you have a right under Freedom of Information to see data relating to your ancestors. You may need to clear it with the NHS but Croydon Archives should be able to advise you.

If you have any trouble, get back to us.

I have moved these posts to Institutions and also given the thread its own title.

Many thanks to you both. I'll get onto that later today.
