We have a policy of not deleting threads, even if the initial query has been answered. Could you explain why you would prefer the threads deleted?

Hi Goffers
I have a couple of threads that have had no answers and it seems like a waist of space so thought they would be better deleted.

Although they may have had no reply at the moment, they may get a response in the future. Every now and then an old thread is resurrected as a result of someone joining the forums.

Sometimes threads are just missed because someone who could provide help goes on holiday. It might be worthwhile posting a reply to your own thread just to refresh it and bring it to the attention of everyone again.

One of my original threads was answered about 7 months later and I am now in contact with my Dad's cousin and have found out lots of history of this side of the family and received photos.

In my opinion there's one current thread that should be deleted ;) but we ought not to make value judgements. This site is already building into a useful repository of knowledge; deleting old threads will put an end to that and turn the site into little more than a chat room.

Let's keep the policy as it is!

Old threads also have their value as I found out. Having broken, with some forum help, a brickwall, I had a whole new list of names. And there they were, in some quite old postings, not actually a solution, but enough to head me off up the tree on a new branch.
I too agree with the 'leave it there somewhere' policy. It helps to make this such a valuable site.

Well after all that has been said while I was away I say keep the policy and I will hope some one joins the forum or see's my threads in the future that can give me information|cheers|.

I agree, it may be weeks, months or even years before you receive a reply. You may never, but some shy people may learn from answers given even though they do not respond, they just take note.

I received a reply to a post nearly 2 years later and now have a family in Canada that I did not know existed.

If you have another reason for deleting your posts, I know some people have joined using their email address as their user name and would like the email address removed, then PM a Moderator. We will always try to oblige for a valid reason. :)

Spanish Senora,
you really mean you want to delete 67 threads!!!

That is the number of posts (minus the two mentioned), rather than actual threads though Mutley ;)

Like the other posters, I think leaving threads alone is the best way - quite apart from being the forum policy. If someone really really has a genuine reason for wishing a thread to be removed, then it is worth discussing it with a Moderator or Bo Peep - we can usually "amend" a thread if there is something causing a serious problem. Removing threads is generally a bad idea as it means the information is not available to others.

I wouldn't want to see any threads removed. They provide valuable information to those not even related to it.

You just have to keep bumping them up and one day a response will come.;)

I agree. I have already found loads of really useful links/information from "old threads".

Think of all the knowledge/advise/effort and energy that would have been wasted if they had been deleted!

I would add that about 6 months ago I saw a reply posted to a thread which was about 2 or 3 years old, and it would seem that the original poster has now left the forum
And there has been a similar instance in the last couple of days, though in this case the last time the original poster accessed the forums was in September this year.
So to spanish senora and georgeyone, I would say never give up hope, keep visiting the forums (even if only once a month :) ), make sure your email addy is current - and that you tick the box that says 'notify me when a post is made to this thread' (or words to that effect).

Don't delete your threads.... you never know....

"HEAVENS TO MURGATROYD"

I only asked the question because I thought I had missed something. Point taken posts or threads are best left alone

Cheers

It is a fact that wherever genealogists gather, you may have to wait (sometimes months or years) for hard facts, but opinions come in at the speed of light!

I'll second that Lesley.

Spanish senora, please don't be upset because it seems we are all ganging up. It's just that we all have the same goal, to make sure that everyone has the best possible chance to find the information they are seeking.
To do this all successful threads are left to be read by others in the hope that it will help someone and all presently unsuccessful threads are left in the hope that today will be the day when someone with the information will read it.

You have done us a favour because we have been able to explain why we don't delete threads unless they are rude, pornographic, or full of bad language. This means that as more people read this thread they will understand too.
Thank you for asking the question.:)

I can reply,

Are you mad woman, would you rip out a page of a Parish Register, burn a census.

Of course not, this is where new age meets archive and every post is useful to someone. Maybe not today, but who knows who is looking for who next week.

Some of my early posts were naf in the extreme, but I can live with that. However the answers were not.

Just keep posting, asking, helping or just joining in with the daft stuff. |hug|
