Just wondering if it is possible to find names of people at 150 Prospect Street, Brooklyn, NY please for 1850 census.

Thanks.

I have access to the U.S. census on Ancestry. Unfortunately there is no facility to do a street search.

The U.S. New York directories do not cover that period either.

Unfortunately the 1850 census is done by wards. The street name may or may not be given. Do you have a first name of the person who you are looking for? I am assuming that this person was born in England. Also one or two from Ireland. I found one in Ward 7, a laborer names George Swan born 1827. Any other info?

Hi Tery, I know James was there, he used 1 "n" but his father used 2 "n's" and the rest of the family used one or two n's.....

He and his family are/were Irish.

Thanks for look up!

Hi - got a chance to do some more lookups this a.m. as everyone else is off to the malls today (am recuperating from T'giving).

Found: 1860 census, Brooklyn Ward 19, District 2, Kings, taken 26 July 1860

James Swann, age 29, born abt 1831 Ireland, bookkeeper
Mary Swann, age 30, born abt 1830 Ireland, keeping house
James Swann, age 3, born abt 1857 New York, minor child

Again, no street addresses were given, just the number of the house/domicile in the order it was visited. Cannot find a James Swann from Ireland in the 1850 census. Did find

Immigration aboard Ship "Queen", 18 May 1850
James Swann, born abt 1830, Ireland, laborer, arriving from Dublin

Could not find them in the 1870 census, there was a James Swann in Philadephia, but he and his family were all born in Ireland and the dates were off.

I'm not sure if these are the people you are interested in. I don't believe they gave street addresses until 1880.

Anything else to try?

Sorry I couldn't find more.

Thanks very much, very interesting! None of them in 1880?

Yes they were from Ireland, went back and forward to US for some reason!! Did it give any occupation please?

The James, age 3 eventually married a Swann from Ireland...he also died in Ireland at his son in law's house...his son in law being..... yes...James Swann:confused:

Fun and games follwing them around.

Can I ask the names of the Philadelphia ones please...hoping for David, Ralph or...yes....another James......|wave||bowdown|

Hope the T'giving suffering end soon!!|5cups|

Will give it a look-see a bit later in the day - offhand, cannot remember the names, was only looking for James. No problem.

Am going to be eating turkey for a few days, biggest problem with the holiday is the leftovers!

Will update as soon as possible.

Okay - got these.
1860 - Mary and James Swann, Brooklyn - gave you this one already.
1850 - James b Ireland 1839, Schuylkill (Upper Mahantongo) PA, 11 years old, living with Berger Household, head of family is a farmer/saw mill (owner) - child was probably there as hired help
1850 - Robert Swann, 40 years, laborer, b Ireland, living NY, NY, Ward 8
wife Mary, age 42 (keeping house), children Ann (8), James (3), Mary (6) all born NY (census date 6 Aug 1850)
1870 - James, Philadephia, PA, b. 1847 Ireland, laborer, wife Elizabeth (67) and son James (23) who is a coal miner
1880 - New York - John b 1873, son of Ebenezer and Eliza
New York - Sarah, living with Charles family - she is a widow so was probably born Charles (listed as sister of head of household)
Pennsylvania - John b Ireland 1820, wife Margret b 1839
John M b. 1849
Fred b. England

There are quite a few Swans listed in the different census, but no Davids or Ralphs. I will take a look at the immigration listings later in the day when the football game is on and the boys are busy :)

Hope to be able to help

More Swanns from immigration, I'm sure they're not the ones you want, but went thru and found what I could.

David, arrived US 1839, born Scotland 1814, farmer, on ship Birmingham

Eliza b Ireland 1831, arrived 18 May 1850 on ship Acme

James (Janes) b. Great Britain 1829, arrived on Georgiana 16 Sept 1845
others were mother Mary, siblings Peter, John, Susanna and Margret

Mary b. Ireland 1829, arrived on Rappahannock 22 June 2852

Also found a passport application for a James Swann, Philadelphia dated 18 Apr 1837, Passport (handwritten, really neat) # 56

Again, none of the other names pops up in the appropriate time period or state.

Sorry
