If you go to Scotlands People, you can search for and buy his birth certificate. This will give you his parents, etc. You also get his parents' wedding cert which will give you their ages, occupations and parents. If you look at the 1891 and 1901 census on the same site, you should find the family and get his siblings.

Thankyou for that Leslie, I wrote up a plan for Scotlands people. My sources for information were like chinese wispers but by a process of
elimination (known birth dates, locality) I think I have found them.
