Hello everyone
I have recently found out that my greatgrandfather fought in the First Boer War (1880-1881?). In 1876 William Clayton, born 1856 in Woking, Surrey married Fanny Eliza Moody Wells, born 1855 in Woking.
In 1882, William now back in Surrey, married Eliza Jane Crane. He is recorded on the marriage certificate as a Widower. However, I cannot find the death of Fanny Clayton anywhere. Neither of them appear on the 1881 census and I wonder (a very faint hope) whether Fanny was in South Africa with him and maybe died there.
Any help or pointers as to where I can look will be very gratefully received.
Many thanks.
Joy Bailey (nee Clayton)
