My gt uncle Percy was a railway clerk from at least 1920 and until he died in 1932 I would like to trace a bit more about his service record however small. He was born in Enfield London and died at Buckhurst Hill in Essex. I have his marriage certificate and death certificate but it does not give the company he worked for. I will be going to the national archives in a couple of weeks and have thought of starting by searching in the ZPER railway magazines (also will look for a will in the indexes) I thought this might be a good place to start ie look for death notice.
Any other hints ideas or advice would be gratefully received.

Most of the railways in that general area in 1920 were operated by the Great Eastern Railway, which in 1923 was taken over by the London North Eastern Railway. With nationalisation in 1948 that became part of British Railways.

You don't name any stations where Percy worked. I note that he died in Buckhurst Hill. That is now a station on the Central Line, part of London Underground, but that was a change that came about in the late 1930s. Prior to that it was GER and LNER.

Have you checked the National Register of Archives for the companies you're interested in?

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/simpleSearch.asp?subjectType=B

I notice that there are some LNER staff records at the National Archives that you'll probably look forward to getting your hands on.

Strangely, there is also:

1874-1935: [LNER] staff register rel to East London and Essex
Doncaster Archives Department
Record Reference DY BRB
Other reference see Annual Return 2007

I wonder how they ended up in Donny.

Railway Ancestors (http://www.railwayancestors.org.uk/prices.html) from Parish Chest have a very good selection
There is a mention of a Steam Railway at Buckhurst Hill.

A local newspaper may have an obituary.
