Does anyone know where I can view the parish register for this church for 1840? It seems that the church was all but destroyed in the Blitz...

The surviving registers for Christ Church Newgate are held at Guildhall Library in London. Up to 1836 the coverage is patchy, but it's much better after that date.

If you only want to check a single event for which you have an exact date (e.g. from the IGI or another index), Guildhall staff may be able to send you a transcript of the entry in the register, free of charge.
