I recently bought the 1861 Census for Chelmsford in the hope of finding a member of my family who was, according to the family "bible", supposed to be the head mathematical teacher at Chemsford School at the time of the Census.

Up to now I have not succeeded in finding him.

Could some SKS with little else better to do check the Census for me.

His name is Francis Robert DREW(Rev.) b.1828-30 London Middx and his wife Julia born 1833 Marylebone Middx.

The relevant Census pieces are RG9 1079 Folios 1-197/203-210.

Much obliged for any help given

Hello Dave,

It’s been almost 2 years since your original post about Francis Drew, so forgive me if you already have the relevant information about his whereabouts in 1861. I found him back home in Middlesex with his wife Julia and they’ve been mistranscribed as Drend by Ancestry:

1861. 13 College Cre, Hampstead, Middlesex
Francis R Drew, Head, Mar, 33, BA Cambridge Univ (Private Tutor) Middx St Clements
Julia Drew, Wife, Mar, 28, Middx Marylebone
With them are 6 male students and 3 servants
RG9. Piece, 91, Folio 92, Page 35

There are a number of references to College Crescent here: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=22639 (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=22639)

Best wishes

Brenda
