View Full Version : Police Constable Help please
I have recently found that one of my relatives appears on the census of 1851 and his occupation was a Police Constable. What is the best way of going about finding any records of his police service ect.
He was living in Teddington at the time which is now in the metropolitan police area, Would it worth contacting them for any archives???

There is a website for the Metropolitan Police Archives - but it does not seem especially helpful for individuals; might be worth an email though!
National Archives have some information - I haven't waded through!!

Have a look at what The National Archives has to say about the Metroplitan Police Service Records (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletID=104&j=1) and, for some really useful background, have a read of the Metropolitan Police History pages (http://www.met.police.uk/history/archives.htm).
Great minds think alike, Barbara! :D

Hi,
My gt. grandfather was in the Met. Try sending an email to George Bird at the Metropolitan Police Historical Collection.
george DOT bird AT met DOT police DOT uk
Took a while to get a reply but they were able to tell me his warrant number, collar number, his division and date of joining and removal. Well worth the wait. You may also get pension details but they were unable to find anything in my case.

Thanks for ALL of your help |hug|
