Looking for an Urriah THEED. No other information about him is known

He married a Martha Unknown sometime prior to 1827. They had three children together.

Thomas 1827 Watford, Herts
Mary Ann 1831 Watford, Herts
Sarah 1834 Watford, Herts.

Martha was born c1803 in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire

Urriah died sometime prior to 1836 as thats when Martha remarries.

Urriah and Martha did not baptise their children. Martha and her second husband baptised her children with their own in the 1840s.

Hello Tezz,

There is no marriage on the Herts Online Marriage Index for a Urriah THEED/THEAD although Martha's marriage to Edward SWAN does appear. There are some marriages for THEED in Watford but not one for him. How do you know that Martha was ever married to Urriah if her children were never baptised at that time. Did his name appear on the later baptismal records and were these in the parish where they were born? I am just considering that Martha may never have been married as you have been unable to find out anything about Urriah and may have been somewhat economical with the truth later on.

Right, apologies to Martha!! I have just looked on Family History Online (a pay per view site but very reasonable and a mine of information) and have found a burial record for a Uriah THEAD on 25 January 1835 at St Lawrence, Abbots Langley, aged 31. Therefore he was born c1804. Also, according to Hugh Wallis's IGI site, there are 2 christenings at Abbots Langley, a Thomas THEED on 18 November 1827 and a Joseph THEED on 22 February 1835, parents Uriah and Martha. They are both extracted records so should be reliable. You may get more information looking at the parish registers of Abbots Langley and also searching the parish registers of Kings Langley looking for any Marthas baptised c1803 and if no actual marriage entry perhaps a Banns entry for her marriage to Uriah.

Good luck and I hope this helps a little.

Back again Tezz,

Silly me - if you send off for the birth certificate of one of the SWAN children, e.g Lucy SWAN, March qtr 1850 at Watford registration district, vol 6, page 632, it will give you the maiden name of Martha which should make tracing her much easier. Certificates can be ordered online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Hi Tezz,
I searched the Abbots Langley PRs and can confirm seven baptisms, viz -
18Nov1827 Thomas s/o Uriah & Martha THEED of Leavesden Woodside (Watford) Labourer.
22Feb1835 Joseph s/o Uriah & Martha THEED of Leavesden Watford Parish Labourer
28Jul1844 Mary d/o Uriah & Martha THEED of Leavesden A.L. (Bn.10Mar1838)
28Jul1844 Sarah d/o Uriah & Martha THEED of Leavesden A.L. (Bn. 08Aug1832)
28Jul1844 Harriett d/o Edward & Martha SWAN of Leavesden A.L. (Bn.23Dec1836)
28Jul1844 George s/o Edward & Martha SWAN of Leavesden A.L. (Bn.15Feb1840)
28Jul1844 William s/o Edward & Martha SWAN of Leavesden A.L. (Bn.19Apr1843)

The Herts Burial Index records the burial of a Joseph THEAD age 1 on 03Jan1836.

A trawl through the Kings Langley baptisms for the period 1798-1810 revealed one Martha
d/o William and Fanny BARNES on 10May1807.

Regards ... Peter
