I've recently acquired the original vellum 1884 marriage certificate of my father's parents. My grandfather was then 27 and my grandmother 20 years of age.
On the reverse is a handwritten statement (in ink) "Inspected 5-2-30" followed by (the inspector's) initials. Nothing else.
None of my father's generation is alive to confirm their dates of death.
Could this possibly be connected to the death of either of my grandparents?
Did insurance companies require proof of marriage before paying out?
