Hello,
I am trying to find information on my Great Grandfather Malcolm Arthur Byway, who was a Sergeant in the 20th Battallion, Manchester regiment during the Great War. I am looking to find out when he was discharged from the Army. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can find this information please??

Thanks inadvance

Alex

Date of discharge sometimes appears on the medal card index. Go to The National Archives (TNA) website http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ and select 'Search our collections'. From the list, select 'Documents online' and you'll see an obvious link to WW1 campaign medals. It'll cost you 3.50Pds to view the medal card, date of discharge is only usually given where someone was medically discharged.

If he was discharged prior to 1921, his service record (if it has survived) will be at TNA at Kew. The majority of service records were damaged or destroyed by enemy action in WW2, but you might be lucky.

If he left the army after 1921, then you will need to apply to the MoD for his service record, see this link for details:
