Hi Christine,
My grandfather's sister Mary Ann HENSON m. John DAVIDSON ( b.abt. 1867 in Scotland a mariner ) in 1899 in South Shields . On the 1901 census they have a son , James aged 8 mos. On an earlier census James was in Berwick with his family. I've never heard of Dry Nott.

A cousin e mailed me to say that her aging father knew that James' family came from the Shetlands and not Berwick. Apparently they had a confectioners place in South Shields when he was a lad . He's in his 80s now. Since I'm living far away from my home town I can't pop down to the library and dig away to my heart's content in the family history section:-) Yesterday I did look up on the IGI for DAVIDSONs in the Shetlands and found 9 entries of births in 1855 to 1866 including two fathers named James. I appreciate any help you could give me.

Dorothy,

I have Mitchells in my direct family, but they were all born in South Shields. The direct line is:
- Eva, born Westoe, South Shields 1873 daughter of
- Albert Alexander Black, born Westoe 1846 a plumber son of
- Alexander, born South Shields 1809 a staithman.

I also know of various siblings of both Eva and Albert as well as various nephews and nieces of Albert.

Let me know if they fit and I can provide more details.

Let me know if there are any other families in 1891 South Shields I can look up for you - I don't want to duplicate your efforts!

By the way - have you joined the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society? At the very least I'd suggest visiting their website.

My G grandfather Robert lived in N. Shields from 1860s to 1925 , his son George Ellis a trawlerman also until 1927 and Robert a fireman on ships with his wife , Annie and daughters lived there, too. I don't know where my GGgrandfather ended up after working on ships as a carpenter in N. Shields in 1861. Don't know what happened to my grandfather William after 1904 in N. Shields but I don't think any of " my" MITCHELLs lived in S. Shields .

Robert MITCHELL , my GG grandfather married Honor Flannighan in 1854 and he actually did live in South Shields later.

Yes. Jan, this is my Ggrandfather and some of his family. I've seen them on the 1871 and 1881 under the surname WILLIAMS , as well as the 1891 and 1901 except to find out where Jane b. 1865 is ; if she married and if Margaret b. 1877 in S. Shields married . Thanks

I'm afraid you 've lost me , Jan , on Jane DAVIDSON :-(

I've just subscribed again to the NFHS as we hope to fly to the UK in September ......provided that gas prices don't sky rocket more than they are at the moment and we'll visit Bolbec Hall again. It's over a $1 now here for gas at the pump!!! Anyway before we come over I'm attempting to further info. on all my branches . I've written again to the Catholic FHS in London for help with my MITCHELLs as they were so helpful some years ago.

Hello,

I would be pleased to hear from you about your ELSEY relatives in Norfolk - I have ELSEY ancestors from south Norfolk.

Migration from Norfolk to the north east of England was common in the 19th century - member sof my own family did it: some settled there, and others returned to Norfolk after a few years.

We have just returned from a month in England including South Shields , of course, where I found many of the ELSY ( and variations) christenings from the St, Hilda's church records. ELSY /ELSEY families are related by marriage to my SEALES originally from NORFOLK. ALICE ELSY a widow nee LARKMAN married my G grandfather Richard H.B.SEALES after his first wife , my G grandmother , died so both families were brought up together . The SEALES and ELSY families had moved from Norfolk but I only know the background of my SEALES ( Downham Market etc.) back to the 1700s not the ELSYs

I have made available for all to use my database of approximately 29,000 records, mainly for the North East of England on my site. These cover all forms of Thompson / Thomson that I know of. Records are available in the same database for some other areas, e.g. parts of Devon, Cornwall, Lancashire.
Records can also be added if anyone feels so inclined.
