Here goes, I am a greenie at this site so will give it a try.

I would like to find out what date and ship the Catmull family sailed from England on if possible.

William Betts Catmull and wife Jane along with 4 small sons left England between 1852 -1855 and settled in Melbourne where a daughter Jane was born in 1855.

I arrive at the 1852 date because the 4th son is found in the birth index as follows:
Births Jun 1852 (>99%)
Catmull Joseph Cornelius Marylebone 1a 312
was in Middlesex during that time but later became part of London

I have searched the Victoria immigration site and find no Catmull's

|help| would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the welcome.

Hi Sharon

If you have some time (or maybe a lot of time), you could try looking on this site: -

http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/shipdate.htm

However ... I've done a quick search, and can't find any Catmulls. That might be a case of incorrect spelling on the manifests, or by transcribers, though.

Also, if your people came steerage, then their names might not be listed. Many of the ships' manifests only list "cabin" passengers by name, and only mention steerage passengers by numbers, e.g. "434 immigrants" or "28 men, 22 women, 19 children, immigrants/settlers". Soooooooo frustrating! |banghead|

Thanks Deb,

At least that is an explanation that makes sense. With a wife and 4 kids steerage is probably the way they sailed. Wm was a tailor by trade.

there are 9 references to Catmull in the early C20th on Australian National Archives. Might be some clues there somewhere, even though the references are over 50 years later, they could be referring to other descendants. http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

I have found the ship that William Betts Catmull and his family arrived in Australia aboard! It was the 'Helen Lindsay' in July 1853. The shipping records have their name spelt as Cutwell but it is definately the right family!

Ruby,

You could also try this site as it has some hits for Catmull - they may of may not be relevant.

There is a Sticky at the front of Australian records that may give you some other places to look:

Hello ad.martin,

Congratulations on a great find! A most impressive first post, eh!

Interesting that they came as Unassisted Passengers.

Hi Leanne,

The Will of the widow Jane is not digitised but that of William Betts CATMULL is. It's mostly about Jane applying for probate. The actual Will is very short - William leaves everything to his dear wife Jane.

Leanne,
Thank you for the link! I looked at the will and while it may not seem like much I think it is a helpful find and I really like seeing both Jane and Wm's signatures. I will keep my eye on this digital collection.
