If you state her age and place in 1861 - other family etc - then maybe someone can find her earlier.

Hi ,
My maiden name is Moore. I was born in New Zealand in Dunedin in 1963. My ancestor John Leslie Moore left Liverpool and arrived in Wellington in 1872 aboard the ship Broomhall. I know nothing else about the family in the UK.

1861 census RG9, Piece 2685, Folio 12, Page 18
5 Pleasant Street, Liverpool

Sarah Moore, widow, age 35, housekeeper, born Scotland
James Moore, Son, age 10, scholar, born Liverpool
William M Moore, son, age 2, scholar, born Liverpool

Possibly the same family:
1851 census HO 107, Piece 2180, Folio 284, Page 34
3 Bridsons Buildings, Liverpool

James Moore, head, age 34, married, mariner, born Peel, Isle of Man
Sarah Moore, wife, age 26, married, born Dumfries, Scotland
William Moore, age 2, scholar, born Liverpool
James Moore, age 6 mths, scholar, born Liverpool

If this is the same family in 1851, then James, Sarah’s husband, presumably died between 1851 and 1861.
William M Moore (in 1861 census) has the second name of Miller (if I am looking at the correct birth reg in the GRO Index) – perhaps this indicates that he had a different father, especially when one considers the time gap between sons James and William. The first William (in 1851 census) must have died young.

Michael has provided two sets of Census data and states -

If this is the same family in 1851, then James, Sarah's husband, presumably
died between 1851 and 1861.
William M Moore (in 1861 census) has the second name of Miller (if I am
looking at the correct birth reg in the GRO Index) - perhaps this indicates
that he had a different father, especially when one considers the time gap
between sons James and William. The first William (in 1851 census) must have
died young.
[endquote]

There is a growing index based on the local Registrars' Indexes which avoids
the errors inherent in the GRO Indexes. In this case the site to check is
LancashireBMD (www.lancashirebmd.org.uk ). I looked for a marriage between
[?] MOORE and Sarah [?} in Lancashire between 1841 and 1851 because Sarah
would have been only 15 in 1841. The following entry was the best match of
those that appeared.

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1846

Surname, Forename(s); Surname, Forename(s); Church / Register Office; Registers At; Reference

MOORE, James; MILLER, Sarah; Liverpool, Our Lady & St. Nicholas & St. Anne; Liverpool; 2053LP/16/269

I think that in 1846 this church was 'Our Lady and St Nicholas', and was the original Anglican church in Liverpool

LancashireBMD is a 'work in progress' and has a great number of Liverpool marriages, but very few Liverpool births and deaths, so it is not possible at present to check for any births or deaths for this family. You would need to obtain copies of the birth certificates of both the William boys and of Sarah's marriage certificate to make a valid interpretation of these facts.

Hope this helps,

Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.)

I'm still puzzled as to why this thread is under the forum heading "Catholic Records"?
