As with so many things, a good place to start is The National Archives (TNA) at Kew - have a look at their research guides prefixed 'British Army' (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp#b)

TNA holds service records, medal rolls, etc.
