Directories

I have found a Directory which will aid my research - namely Melville's
1858 Directory of Kent. Does anyone know if or where I could purchase a copy of this useful book please?

There is an online site where I could browse it but I would rather have a copy at home.

Talking about Directories, by the time they were published, eg 1858, the info is slightly out of date as they were published for that year, so the info was usually collected in around June the previous year.

The 1858 Melville's Directory for Kent was probably done in the summer of 1857 ready for 1858. In 1879 my ancestor appears on a London Directory for a beer house yet he had given up the license in September 1878. So the info for that 1879 directory must have been collected in around mid 1878.

Hi, thank you for your interesting comment. In my case my ancestor lived in the same place for 50 years running his business until he died so I think the Directory I have ordered from Parish Chest will be just what I need. I did browse some of it online and actually found him listed.
