If you are talking about the 1960s or 1970s, it may prove to be rather difficult because of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (http://www.crb.gov.uk/Default.aspx?page=313)(1974).

You may be better off tracking down newspaper reports of the crime and subsequent trial.

Try The Times Archive (http://archive.timesonline.co.uk/tol/archive/)
1785 - 1985

If it is the 1860-1870's try
The Old Bailey (http://www.hrionline.ac.uk/oldbailey/search/)
1674 - 1913-

You will not be allowed access to criminal records from this period.

Capital cases are indexed on TNA's catalogue, but unless you can show good reason for access, the actual papers remain closed for a period of 70 years. However, in the case of a capital offence, the dates given on TNA's catalogue may help you to narrow down the period in which to search newspapers of the period - which is where you are likely to find details of such offences.
