Some time around 1846, Alexander Sharp (born Fife Scotland 1824) joined the Royal Horse Guards.
In a letter he sent to relatives in Australia (about 1852), his address was given as:
1st Battn. 3rd Comp. S.F. Guards, Royal Horse Guards, London.
Does anyone know what the S.F. stands for and whether there are any records for plain ordinary ranks from this time still in existence?
I picked up a few links from an earlier post on The Royal Horse Guards, but need to know if the British National Archives will deal with research by mail as I live in Australia.
Any help appreciated - Trish
