View Full Version : Copying photos from the Web

Maybe someone can explain.

I've had this new computer since Dec 2007.

Over the past 9 yrs I had 3 second hand computers. When I had those three computers whenever I wanted to copy a photo as soon as I placed my cursor on it I used to get a pop up icon on the photo and I was able to copy every thing I wanted. Even if the photos had a 'No right Click'' window showing on the page.

I never tried to find out what that icon was, I think it was some piece of code that the computer had.

Now with this new PC that tiny pop-up icon does not shop up. So I cannot copy certain photos.

Does anyone had or has this icon pop up whenever the cursor is placed on any photo?

And can you explain what it is

Thanks.

Gdday Rove!

I imagine all the experts in the northern hemisphere are still in the sack or having their breakfasts, so perhaps I can offer some (strictly untechnical) advice.

I use both PC and Macintosh.
With either of them I can click on a picture and 'copy' by pressing 'Ctrl' and C or by going to "File" (at the top) and click on "Save As".

The copy can then be pasted to a document, the "Save As" will create a jpeg which you can put in whatever file you like. I usually save jpegs to the Desktop until I've decided the most appropriate home for them - but as I said: I'm not at all technical.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Another 'non-techie' answer to keep this on top of the pile so maybe someone with knowledge will really help.

I think it might have more to do with your operating system 'past & present' than the PC itself. Are you using windows ? If so, which version ? Vista, XP ? Give us a few more details, then when the techies come in, they will have better clues.:o

I forgot to mention the obvious method - to click on the picture, then right click on your mouse to bring up a menu, which will also give you the choice of 'Copy' or 'Save as' - among other things.

Hi Rove,

I think you're probably referring to the Image Toolbar which was built in to Internet Explorer.

Unfortunately, Microsoft have removed the Image Toolbar code from the latest Internet Explorer due to lack of popularity. I suspect you were using Internet Explorer 6 on your last computer?

My advice is to scrap Internet Explorer altogether & download the (free) Firefox browser instead:
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

The beauty of Firefox, apart from being faster & more secure than IE, is the ability to customise your browsing experience by installing small 'add ons'.

When you've installed Firefox you can then install an 'add on' which recreates the IE6 image toolbar behaviour when you hover your cursor over images:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/243

Voila:

If all else fails you can use either the PrintScreen/SysRq button alone or the Alt and PrintScreen/SysRq simultaneously. The first copies an image of the whole screen to the clipboard, the second combination copies just the current window. Having got the screen shot on the clipboard you can paste it wherever you want, eg picture-editing software to trim off the excess bits of the resultant image.

I hope that's clear.

The Add On works like a charm, thanks

Thanks guys. Youv'e been a good help.

Yes I was on IE6 pre Dec 07 on my old PC

Now I have Vista Premium with IE. I have been tempted to download Firefox but been a bit scared something might go wrong as I'm not very brlliant on the PC.

If you say OK go ahead I may do it. Yes the way you explained re the IE toolbar that was what I needed to know. I did not know that bit.

Thanks.

Nothing will go wrong & don't worry, you'll still have Internet Explorer installed on your PC if you decide you don't like it.

Here's a step-by-step guide:
How to Download & Install the Firefox Browser (http://websearch.about.com/od/firefox/ss/installfirefox.htm)
(Ignore the bit about system requirements. The latest Firefox - FF3 is Vista compatible. The rest of the guide still applies)

Here some more general info:
Mozilla Firefox Browser Guide & Tutorial (http://www.newbie.org/firefox/)
(N.B. Firefox 'Add Ons' & 'Extensions' are the same thing!)

The only thing IE was good for is Windows Update, but Firefox even manages to get round that with the IE Tab Add On (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419) This can open a link in an Internet Explorer tab within Firefox. Useful for the (very rare) occasion that a webpage displays incorrectly in Firefox.

Colin's suggestion above of using the PrtScn button is a good one, which I use myself. But, bear in mind, this won't work for any large image that's bigger than your screen.
