Hi,
I was just wondering where the best place to research in Cumbria would be? Do the record offices in Cumbria hold different information to those in London? I am visiting my grandparents in a few weeks who live there. I am ideally looking at Cleator Moor, Kendal, Whitehaven, Wasdale Head, Lamplugh, Muncaster and Castle Sowerby. Also I was wondering if you can gain access to Parish Records? I am not too sure. Any info would be great.
Thanks
Stephanie

The Cumbria Archives Service (http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/) has Records Offices in Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal and Whitehaven.

Click the online catalogue link on their website to see what they hold.

They have an online cateologue for the records they hold.

It may be worth having a dip into Hugh Wallis's site before you go. There are quite a few records from the IGI on there, which might give you a starting point.

The records office in Whitehaven have parish records for most if not all churches around cleator Moor [on microfilm]. They also hold copes of the "Whitehaven news" dating back about 150 years [on microfilm].
The staff are polite and very helpful.

Regards, Paul.

I can heartily recommend Carlisle RO too, small with helpful, friendly staff and in the fantastic setting of Carlisle Castle.
