Hello, im new to all this. My brickwall is probably very flimsy compared to others on this page.
Im researching my fiance's family tree. One of her ancestors is a JAMES WINTER (b. 1809). He is listed on the 1851 census and the 1871 census, but not on the 1861 census.

Why would this be? Is he abroad fighting in a war? Is he in prison?

Hello Followhounds - welcome to the forum.

Do you have any further details about James - where he was born and was living in 1851 and 1871. That will help us to search for you.

Also, have you searched under MINTER - sometimes W and M can be confused when transcribed.

Many thanks, for both returns he was living in Yorkshire, near Bedale.

I never thought to search for J. MINTER....

Was his wife's name Mary?

If so, try RG9; Piece: 3559; Folio: 53; Page: 13 - living in Barmby-on-the-Moor

His wife was called Ann(e) but there is no record of her in the 1861 census either. Is this significant?

I havent tried the Welsh/Scottish returns, I figured they could have been away at the time of the census if he was a seasonal Ag. Lab. ??

Are we talking about the james Winter who was born Mary Gold Hill Samberth about 1809?

Living with Ann in Kirby Wiske 1871 who was born Maunby, Yorkshire, England about 1811?

Thats the chap.

In 1871 Thomas WINTER (b. 1862) is listed as living with his grandparents (JAMES WINTER). We do not know which one of James' children gave birth to Thomas. We appreciate that Thomas may have been illegitimate.

Many thanks.

You beat me to it Michelle. I think it is them, because it's Ann's home village and they are there in 1851 as well.

I also found this in the IGI

JAMES WINTER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 08 AUG 1808 Kirby Sigston, Yorkshire, England
JAMES WINTER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 09 AUG 1808 Kirby Sigston, Yorkshire, England

The entry for the 8th August is member submitted, and the one for the 9th is extracted, but both give the father as Peter Winter.

Kirby Sigston is only about 5 miles from Maunby, and on the 1851 census his place of birth is transcribed as Sigstor, though I think it says Sigston on the original. So you might want to have a look at the PRs for Kirby Sigston :D

hope this helps
