Dear Listers,
The BUTTON family is on my mother's side of the tree..................
I'm hoping someone might be able to fill in the gaps for the children of WILLIAM BUTTON c1800 and MARY GREEN 1796. All of these children and parents are Suffolk related.

Lydia c1818 married Edward Parker [date and children]
Daniel 1820 [marriage and children]
George1826 [marriage and children]
Elizabeth c1827 [marriage and children]
Keziah 1830-1909 [marriage and children]
William c1832 married Elizabeth Bluett [date and children]
Robert c1835-1873 [marriage and children]
Ann 1837 [marriage and children]
Eliza c1839 [date and children]
Eliza is an interesting subject. At first I thought she was raped as the first "husband was "UNKNOWN" and she chose to keep her maiden name. But now I see she has not one but two child in differing years. Although rape is possible you'd think it unlikely wouldn't you? She also marries a JAMES HAMMOND sometime later and the children are still Buttons. I have no date for this marriage and I wonder if she had children by James Hammond.

Truly appreciate any help.
My best to you and yours, Ray [OZ]

As you know they are from Suffolk, have you tried the Suffolk list?

I have no date for this marriage and I wonder if she had children by James Hammond. The comment 'unknown' is more likely to mean that Eliza didn't want to name the father, or if she was over-promiscuous, just didn't know. The two children may have been from different fathers, and unless a marriage took place between the mother and the actual father, it would not be uncommon for the children to keep the mother's name.

The GRO Marriage Index has an entry as follows:
Emma Button Dec Qtr 1864 Bosmere Reg Dist Vol 4a Page 1229, and on the same page is James Hammond.

By the 1871 census they have three children all named Hammond, whilst the previous two are called Button, so it would be fairly conclusive that James was not the father.
