ada fletcher married william fletcher dec 1912 (maiden name was davies)
they had a son albert fletcher dec 1912. william died 1915 at war.

ok here's the tricky bit ada met a american soilder moved to america with him leaving albert behind. but i am not sure if ada and william had a daughter coz i have been told that she took her daughter with her???

ada and this american had a son but he took on the fletcher name.

so did this american take on the fletcher name or did they marry???

i am stuck with this one and don't know where to look???|banghead|

If a child's birth was recorded under the maiden name of the mother (or in your case it appears to be the name of her first husband) it usually meant the mother and father were not married.

However, I have a relative who took on the maiden name of his mother later in life because (family lore has it) he so despised his father he did not want any connection.

If you go to FreeBMD (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/) you can search by the surname of the husband and the maiden name of the mother for the time frame you are talking about. I assume the daughter was born after Albert?

Having seen Albert's birth registration in Oldham district (Dec Q 1912), I had a look for Fletchers with the mother's maiden name of Davies - also Oldham. I found these, both in September Q 1914:

Tom Fletcher, vol 8d, page 1406
Vera Fletcher, vol 8d, page 1310

Did her dad die after 1915 and leave a will in which he mentions his daughter?

I appreciate that her husband died in 1915 as you previously mentioned. It is her dad that may give a lead.

Is the above date for her husband, or her father? If her father survived until after the death of her husband and after she run off - he may have mentioned her favourably/unfavourably in his will. Try seaching the probate calendar on film at most county record offices.

it was ada's husband that died in 1915 so it was ethel's dad that died i think i get what you mean |book2|

What you're looking for is someone who lived after 1915 - after the time she did a runner with the American. You've looking for some source of information that may possibly mention her. The probate calendar is easy to use, readily available and allows you to order copies of wills from the Probate Registry.

So, who might have died after 1915 whose will might mention her - or her children? - Possibly her dad might have died and left a will?!

That's the theory.

Although the name Fletcher is quite a commonly occurring one, you might also try searching the BT passenger lists on findmypast to see if you can find when she emigrated and possibly with whom?
