View Full Version : CNN Daily spam

Just a quick warning to anyone who receives the current top spam at the moment. It claims to come from CNN (the USA news folks) and has 10 "news" headings - which indeed are real news headings - BUT the links to "watch the video" will claim, if you attempt to click them, that you are missing a vital ActiveX component and need to download something - which of course is a nasty little trojan!

Usually arrives from "CNN Daily" and titled "CNN.com Daily Top 10" or similar.

A lot of the spam filters are currently missing this one, so you could well find it in your inbox.
Simple instruction - Simply delete it. Don't be tempted to click the links, just hit the delete button.

Also the newer variant - CNN Alerts: My Custom Alerts

Equally bad - do not click the links, just delete the mail.

The CNN Daily spam seems to have eased and this Alerts spam has taken over as the most common malware spam at the moment.

Hi Mark...

I received them ( CNN) for about 2 weeks straight in my deleted files and hopefully they have given up as I haven't got one for a few days....

Chisel...

With all the viagra ads I've developed a stiff upper lip|biggrin|

It does seem to have passed as the "spam of the week" now. In its various guises it was really clogging up my email system :(
Seems to be all "celebrity spam" currently - but again with a "watch the video..." catchline.

I was going to make a joke about viagra spam earlier when I spotted Chisels post, but I thought I may get my wrists slapped for it - so I didn't ;)

Is there anyway to block the pictures on the odd one that gets through my filters? Once in awhile I go to my inbox and there's a naked "supposed " celebrity smiling at me!|:o

I block the sender, and go to message rules, but how many ways can they think of to spell different words to get it past the blocked messages?

Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue,

I use a program called Mailwasher. Basically all my emails go through it first. I have it set so it shows me the email title and a few lines of the message. Anything I don't fancy I delete before it even gets to my mailreader.

There is a free version as well as a paid version.

I had a flashing "You are a winner. This is no fake!" box on A* today. Didn't dare click it and will send off an email tomorrow about it as I do not want a case of viagra or otherwise in my mailbox!

Hi Procat.....

I "googled" mailwasher and came up with a few options. (Must admit I have never heard of it.)
What I have now seems to have lost its immunity to alot of stuff. I was away for a little over 24 hours and when I came home this evening there were 3 messages in my inbox of which only one was legit and in my deleted box ( and I always check them, because sometimes a good message gets booted in there for some reason) there were 74 messages......all garbage.
Do you know if it is compatable with other blockers , for example, those provider by my server?
One of my sons will be home next week after his sister's wedding...guess what he will be doing for me!!
Thanks for the suggestion. :)

Hi Sue,

My ISP provides spam blocking. I have been using it happily with Mailwasher for a number of years now. It is just another brick in the wall (good title for a song there) against the spammers. What the ISP misses can be deleted from their server without the need to download to your own computer. And if you delete incorrectly you can do a restore.

I tried it for a while and then purchased the full version and I am happy with it.

If you can disable html in your emails, then you won't see the images Sue.
The only "downside" with doing that (if your mail client allows you to do so) is that it will block all html formatting in your emails - so no animated graphics or flashy stuff (personally, to me, that is an advantage!).
My email client allows me to show the email with the html enabled if I consider it to be safe - but I very rarely bother to enable it for any messages.

The online webmail systems from folks like Microsoft or Google have very good filters - my Gmail account and Hotmail get spam, but it is nearly always filtered straight to the junk. Only a couple per year seem to get through. In the case of gmail, you can - if you so desire - set it up to take your mail from other accounts and run it through their filters - but I don't do that myself.
My own mail system has a number of things which filter the mails and adapt to changing patterns (for the geeky - spam assassin, bogofilter etc). I also run filters on my mail client here too.
