Hi I'm banging my head on a brick wall!!!
My great great grandfather was a John Thomas Wheatman born around 1867 in Kendal Westmorland. However, I can find no record of his birth! Or either of his parents!!It's so frustrating, it is possible that his mother was unmarried or the name was mispelt! But i am not sure! I was wondering if anybody else was looking for this person, or whether anyone has any ideas I could try?
THanks very much!

Hi Sue,
Yes possibly, I have come across this before. Perhps I should have mentioned before, that apparently somebody researched the family before, and found is mother's name was Sarah Wightman. Which could possibly mean a spelling mistake somewhere, however, I think this may be him, but I can't find his birth anywere!!
It's all so frustrating!!
Thank you for the help!

What is the last thing you know for definite? Was he the John Thomas WHEATMAN who married Hannah THOMPSON March quarter 1895, Ulverston, Cumbria? Who subsequently appears on the 1901 census aged 34 (iron ore miner) with three young daughters in Dalton? If so, what was on the marriage certificate?

I have found the Andersons again in the 1871 census, and the stepson (as seen in 1881) has the surname WHITEMAN and there is also a lodger called ABRAHAM WHITEMAN with the same name.

I think you have it there - Wheatman, Wightman and Whiteman seem to be interchangeable. Time to order a birth certificate I think!

Hi Pipsqueak and Sue,
Thank you for your help!! Yes the Famiysearch one does look likely, I definitely think there must be a spelling mistake along the way!
Thank you again!!

Remember that the vast majority were illiterate at this date - so it would depend on how the clerk decided to spell it!

Hi Steph,
I wonder whether you're still tracing the Wightman family? I have a large collection of the Wightman family on my Ancestry site. My great grandmother was Elizabeth Wightman born 1854 in Kendal and emigrated to NZ with her husband and family in 1905/1906. Your John Thomas Wheatman was son of Sarah Wheatman daughter of Mary Whatman, daughter of John Wheatman/Wightman/Weetman, died 1843, married to Elizabeth Unknown, son of John Wightman born 1781, died 1826 and Alice Sedgwick.
I'll be happy to share more with you if you wish.
Good wishes
Rosemary
