Dear members,

I have searched & searched through army records MIC, various BMD births & his 1957 death certificate here in Melbourne but I cannot find exactly when my dear grandad was born. Nor do I know the name of his mum and dad :-(

His name was Harry POWELL and born abt 1884 around Leeds, UK.

Harry was a gunner, 459th Battery,118th Bde 1st Canadian Div, Flanders 1915

I found him as early as 1891 through the census at 28 Argyll Street, Leeds.
His SWB roll shows his army career from 02 Sep 1904 to 11 Dec 1918
I have him married in 1906 from 28 Argyle St. Leeds.
So far no army pension info through Anc***y.Com just his MIC card

He may have ben born out of wedlock to some of the girls living at the same address over the years and assumed the Powell name ???

In the 1891 and 1901 census he shows up as son and grandson. Yep, I am confused :-)

Just hope some kind soul can help.

Kind Regards

Steve

On his marriage certificate, what did he give as his father's name and occupation?

Hi Steve welcome to the forum. I have just had a look between 1883 and 1885 for a Harry Powell birth. Have found the following

1. Harry Powell Sept Qtr 1883 Dewsbury 9b, 641 Dewsbury is not far from Leeds which is my home town.

2. Harry Powell Dec Qtr 1884 Bradford, Y 9b, 244 Bradford is not that far away either.

I also looked for Henry Powell as Harry was sometimes used for Henry as I found out with my grandfather Henry who was also know as Harry. But no luck. Good luck with your research someone else may be able to add something too.

Maybe this one helps: the family are in Leeds, which is where Thomas and Harry were born.

Bridget Powell, wife, age 46, born Ireland
Ann Powell, daughter, unmarried, age 21, Boot Machinist, born Ireland

I assume that you already have this census. It appears that John senior is called ‘P J’, Bridget is just ‘B’, and John junior is also called ‘P J’.

Would this be a way to find some information?
Harry’s brother Thomas was also born in Leeds. There is a possible registration as follows:
Births Jun Qtr 1881, POWELL, Thomas Brown, Leeds (javascript:golink(%22/cgi/districts.pl?r=65892094&d=bmd_1216156954%22)), Vol 9b Page 566 (javascript:gopage(1881,2,0,'9b','566',1))
Would this tell you anything about Harry’s parents?

Another scenario - could they be the children of John junior? He shows up in the 1901 census as a widower with three children all born since 1892. As a widower he could hardly look after six:confused::confused:

Just another thought outside the square.

Are you aware that Harry and Beatrice registered a child's birth in Victoria, Australia in 1915.

I will PM you the birth registration, since this year is no longer available locally online due to privacy restrictions.

This child's birth certificate should confirm Harry's age and birth place.

Hello Michael,

Wow, the responses are coming in so fast and this caveman will take a day or so to take things in.

You are all so very kind.

Warm regards to all

Hi MichaelPipe,

I see where you are coming from. Keep in mind the "GRANDSON" could be his brother or his cousin, if you get my drift.

I hope it is his brother and they both share the same mother and father.

Steve

Do you know Bridget's maiden name at this point?
I am trying to find a John and Bridget Powell born in Ireland. Your John and Bridget match age/year wise so I was curious since these are older posts if you know. My Bridget's maiden name was O'Conell.

Thanks
Christina
