I believe an ancestor was a JP in Newcastle in the late 1890's. Does anyone know if there were official lists that could confirm this? |cheers]

If you can find somebody with a directory for Newcastle 1890's they might be able to look it up, there are Northumberland directories in Parish Chest to purchase, might be some info there.

I don't have any first-hand experience with Newcastle, but I've certainly seen JPs listed in some county directories. Have you tried the Historical Directories (http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp) site? They have an 1898 Ward's Directory of Newcastle (as well as 1890 and 1910) and an 1894 Kelly's Directory of Northumberland. You might also want to try an A2A (http://www.a2a.org.uk/) search, checking in particular the Northumberland Record Office.
My apologies if you've already tried these.
Good luck -
Tim
