My grandfather who died in 1995, enlisted for the RAF in August 1945 and left in 1948. Any ideas why he did this? I have his service records, but no clues there. Did he join up as part of WWII (which didn't end until September) or for another reason? I'm sure this can't be National Service as it pre-dates 1948 which I think is when it began. Also, any ideas about deciperhing the abbreviations on such records?

Hello David,

I have had a bit of a google and it looks as though National Service started as early as 1939. Visit awardmedals.com and click on "About National Service" in the box on the left for further information.

So, it could wll be that your grandfather's service was just that - National Service.

Post the abbreviations on here, we are good at puzzles. Joined August 1945, therefore he might have been retained until they were sure the hostilities had ended, which I believe was around 1958.

Now you got me! There are a number of sites and without spending too much time I found the last one.
PDC - Personnel Despatch Centre - No 101 which was at Kirkham, near Blackpool.
None of these others I had seen before.
RAF Bridgnorth was a basic training station ie square bashing. Heaton Park was a continuation and transit camp, near Manchester. Staveton is near Gloucester.

Regarding the 3RG 3RC is there an error here, I think they should be the same, Called up to 3RC, reported to 3RC (Recruitment Centre?)
