In the 1822 directory for Edinburgh Alexander Nicholson was mentioned as a grocer of 26 Union Place. Is it possible that this premises could still be seen in Edinburgh or would it be long gone . I can't find this street on a modern map of Edinburgh.
Thanks for your help.

Union Place is a section of one side of the street called Leith Walk and is still there, or at least partly. At the end of 1969, numbers 1-14 were demolished and replaced with a large roundabout.

There's a restaurant at number 25, that I've eaten in several times. However, that is also the last address in the block.

Looking at the old maps, I think that the last building on the block may originally have had 3 doors. So it's possible that numbers 25-27 have since been combined into a single address.

Numbers 20-25 were planned in 1800 and are listed buildings, so are likely to be the same buildings as were present in the 1820s, although the shop on the ground floor of the former number 26 has since been merged into number 25.

Here's a link showing the building: http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=t9smm9gr12cs&style=b&lvl=2&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=28423573&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&where1=25%20union%20place%2C%20edinburgh&encType=1

The present day restaurant is the red coloured building on the corner of Union Place (Leith Walk) and Union Street.
