I am trying to find the parents of Alfred Pearman who was born 1843 Wheathampstead. He is in the 1861 Sandridge census with William Stones as an apprentice cordwainer. I found him married in 1871 but he died just before the 1881 census. Any help appreciated please.

Hello Delta,

Alfred is on the 1851 but has been transcribed as PARMAN.

He is living in Brewhouse Hill, Wheathamstead(sic) with his Grandmother Maria Pearman (58, Straw Plaiter, b W'sted) aged 7 and is a scholar. Maria is widowed and there is no sign of his parents.

Class: HO107; Piece: 1713; Folio: 64; Page: 38

You may have to obtain a copy of his birth certificate.

Just had a look on 1841 and found the following:

Village, Wheathampsted

Maria Pearman, 45, S Pl (probably straw plaiter), Y (to being born in county)
Mary Pearman, 15, S Pl, Y

Mary will be aged 15 - 20 as the ages were rounded down and could well be Alfred's mum.

Class: HO107; Piece 442; Book: 8; Civil Parish: Wheathampstead; County: Hertfordshire; Enumeration District: 9; Folio: 12; Page: 18; Line: 5

I also found this:

Deaths, Oct to Dec 1843
St Albans District
Mary PEARMAN
Vol: 6
Page: 307

So, it looks like Alfred's birth certificate is the only likely way, unless there is an entry in the Parish Records for St Helen's, Wheathampsted.

By the way, St Helen's (http://www.iananddot.org/chphoto/wheathampstead.htm) is at the foot of Brew House Hill.

Hello Jan
Thank you for finding his grandmother, who I have now found a marriage for in 1816, but can only find their daughter Mary. I think I will have to send for Alfred's certificate eventually.
Again, many thanks for your help.
