My grandmother's brother emigrated from England to Victoria B.C. and, in 1911, was living at (in?) Pomona Royal. He was a waiter and lived at this place with a number of other waiters/cooks and stewards. I've tried googling "Pomona Royal" and have checked the archives of Canada and a couple of B.C. sites with no luck. Does anyone know if this was a hotel or ship? He joined the Cdn Expeditionary Forces in 1916 and was killed in France in 1917 so this is the only Cdn census he would be on. Hoping someone can help!

Thanks!

Hi Ann,

His name was Thomas Twose.

It looks like 'Princess Royal' to me, as in a ship.

There was a C.P.R coastal steamer named Princess Royal that sailed the B.C. Coast in the early 1900's.

Hi,
I just confirmed with the 1911 Census that Thomas was on the Princess Royal.

If you would like a copy of the census let me know. I will need your private email to do so. Please send it via PM.

Interesting! I saw the image on A******* at the local library but the image was very small and I wasn't able to zoom in. The name "Pomona Royal" was the place of habitation given on the transcript version of the census entry so perhaps it SHOULD be the Princess Royal. Next time I am at the library I'll have another look but will for now go with your suggestion, Bumblebee, and research this ship. Many thanks to you all!

Our messages crossed, Ann. That's great to get a second confirmation of "Princess Royal" as googling Pomona Royal, of course, brought up only the china pattern! Thank you for your kind offer. I will message you privately.

Hi Caliope,

Do you have copies of his attestation papers? If not, I can send them to you if you PM me with your email. It lists his address, next of kin and physical description.

Also, there is an entry for him on the Commonwealth War Graves site. Not sure if you've seen that one. Here's the direct link

Thank you for your kind offer, Lesley, but I do have these as well as his gravesite in the Adanac cemetary in France. All of this now helps to complete Thomas' story.
