My ancestor James Challinor b c 1820 in Liverpool worked as an engine driver. On his marriage certificate in Liverpool in 1847, his occupation was an engine driver.
I have found an entry for James Challinor on the Black Sheep Index for 1853 -a railway report for 1853 Retford, stating he works for GNR as an engine driver. I haven't sent for the report because I'm not sure it will give any more information.
I've been to the National Archives but they only seem to have records of maintenance staff.
Can anyone help?

Lorraine,

Staff records for the GNR are held at Kew in RAIL 236/727-745, but those relating to individuals seem to start c1861, so you may have missed out.

The Morning Chronicle of 17 Sep 1853 has a full report of what seems to be the incident you are after. I have sent you the link in a PM.
