I have a Henry Smith away back in my tree who was born in Leslie Fifeshire. Leslie is located approximately 10 or 12 miles north Kirkcaldy. I don't know his age but he was the father of a child born in 1850. The marriage record can't be found so it is assumed the child was illegitimate even though he had his father's surname. I would guess Henry was born in the 1820s or 30s.

These are not exactly rare names, so you're more likely to make contacts if you provide a bit more info - forenames, dates (even approx), occupations, anything that would allow people to pick your Smith (for example) from the others in the area.
To prevent duplication of effort, tell us where you've looked. Have you seen the stickies at the top of the General Scottish forum on different aspects of scottish research?
