Can anyone tell me where to find trial records. A friend heard that her grt grandfather was murdered and the murderer was caught and hanged. Where could she find further details please?

Hi there,

Do you have any dates or location?

Newspapers are always the easiest way to find details from such events. As Jan says, do you know where and when approximately?

His death certificate would be the place to begin.

It depends on when the murder took place, but if you know the name of the murderer, use TNA's catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp)

In the word or prhase field, enter the surname of the offender and follow this with 'AND murder' (note that the AND should be in capitals)

Other than that, try searching the proceedings of the Old Bailey (http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/)online

Thanks for all the replies.
I have no details myself. Will get in touch with her and see if I can get some, or get her to come on the forum herself.

Excellent idea! ;)

Often hangings took place outside the local gaol. When you know where it might be worth googling for the nearest prison, most of the famous hangings are recorded in all the gory detail .
