I'm trying to track my Great grandfather Alfred Horace Poynter. He was born about 1875 and died 1949 (I know because of family but can't find any record of his death). He married a Nellie Smith (Again I can't find this). They don't appear on the 1901 census but I am told he was in the Boer War and stayed in South Africa for a while. They did return to England because their 1st child was born in 1908.

How can I find out if he was in the Boer War and when he returned.

Please Help!

Does the birth certificate for the child in 1908 give Alfred's occupation - I presume that is where you have the MMN of Smith from. Wondering if they married on the overseas index?

Thanks

Hi doodiedoo

The passengers lists are on a well known pay per view site. Apart from the information I gave above the ship was the 'Goorkha' and departed from Southampton. The lists don't give any more information than that.

Hope that helps.
